There's plenty of evidence that advertising pays off for clients. But according to The Daily Beast, it doesn't pay so much for the people who work in the industry.
Sadly, they placed Advertising 4th on their "20 Most Useless College Degrees".
It's a shame that an industry so dependent on top creative and business talent is unable to pay top dollar for it.
We won't go into the many complex reasons for the brain drain and layoffs in the ad industry because it would make us cry (we're very sensitive about the business we love).
Frankly, there are just too many better ways to make a living, a lot faster, than in advertising. We hope that changes, but we're not holding our breath. Pass the tissues.
Here's a look at The Beast's stats:
Median starting salary: $37,800
Median mid-career salary: $73,200
Change in number of jobs, 2008-2018: -800
Percentage Change in number of jobs, 2008-2018: -1.71
Undergraduate field of study: Communications
Number of students awarded degrees 2008-2009:: 78,009
Sob, snigg, Mom was right! I should have been an undertaker! And I shouldn't have watched so much TV when I was growing up. And running with scissors... well, that's a whole 'nother issue.
